The nation’s high court asked the state court for clarification on its reasoning and left open the possibility of reconsidering the case. The ruling was a victory for Republican George W. Bush, but did not directly affect Democrat Al Gore’s challenge of the election results. A key ruling by another Florida court was expected within hours.
