If the FL Legislature finds it necessary to select a competing slate of electors in an attempt to preserve a suddenly evaporated Bush victory, then we're looking at something close to a worst-case scenario. Gore would somehow have to have pulled enough votes out of the contest trial and recount, or the judges in Martin and/or Seminole will have had to have thrown out the (thousands) of questioned Bush absentee ballots - forcing the Bushies to move to controversial, to say the least, tactics. If the whole thing then goes to new showdowns in the FL and US Supreme Courts and the Congress and so on... then whoever wins the Presidency will be doing so under about as dark a cloud as you can get short of sudden revelation of fraud, blood in the streets, consorting with interns... Once upon a time, I would have presumed that someone would stand up and say "Enough!" - perhaps after some sub rosa deal (I'll give up if you promise x, y, or z). Doesn't help that Gore and Bush seem to despise each other so intensely. As for the market, I have the Nasdaq returning to volatility levels it's seen only twice before in its history - in March, and early last year. In saner times, you could write strangles or something, confidently presuming that a return to normalcy was inevitable... Must admit am tempted, against reason, to take a flyer on some Nasdaq calls... The profit graphs on some relatively low strikes on former high-flyers are unreal. Nora O'Donnell is beautiful.
