as OX said, the margin/maint is set independently of the current trading price of the underlying index ....

however, the m/m amount required Can and Will change if and when the index moves up a great deal in trading price...

case in point ... the Naz futures have moved upward by a sizeable sum and back down 50percent this past 18 months ...
as I don't actively trade them, I've not kept up with the exact amount of m/m required but I do recall several emails from IB *(raising)* the margin amounts for their emini...
the m/m has gone up once or twice since I've been trading the esmini with IB ....

it is NOT done capriciously, but it is done fairly quickly so it is not a bad idea to have somewhat more in the account than the minimum required to keep from being sold out at an unadvantageous price....
