The spirit that you hear is of the working class and marginalized groups coming into their own. It has a vitality that was often muted in the suavity of pre- rock pop, with its pretensions to glamour and classiness. It is more plainspoken, more direct. But that applies to "Peggy Sue" or "Blue Suede Shoes" as much as "Don't Think Twice" or "I Shall Be Released"...........
