Yale hires private eye to study Jovin case

BY ANDREW PACIOREK

Yale has retained a private investigator to look into the Suzanne Jovin '99 murder case, the Hartford Courant reported Monday.

The Courant's unnamed sources said the University had hired the investigator because of the failure of the New Haven Police Department to crack the case in the past two years.

Several Yale administrators, including Yale President Richard Levin, declined to confirm the report.

"Sometimes being helpful involves doing something publicly, and sometimes it involves confidentiality," Levin read to reporters from a statement. "We all want to see justice at this time, and we are all doing what we can in our respective roles and in cooperation with one another to bring that about."

Jovin's parents, Tom and Donna, said in an e-mail Monday they asked Yale 18 months ago to hire a private investigator.

"If [Yale administrators] have opted for that course at this time, so much the better," they said.

The Jovins met with police, several Yale Corporation members, State's Attorney Michael Dearington and Mayor John DeStefano Jr. a month ago.

They declined to say over the weekend whether there had been any new developments in the case.

James Van de Velde '82, the only named suspect in the case, said he also asked for a private investigation of the case some time ago.

"If the report is true, this is a very positive development," said David Grudberg '82, Van de Velde's attorney. "Jim called for Yale to hire private investigators well over a year ago. We have believed for a long time that the case needs a fresh perspective unrelated to the New Haven Police Department."

Jovin was stabbed to death Dec. 4, 1998. She was found around 10 p.m. in the city's East Rock neighborhood, a mile north of campus.
