Thanks patim. But I don't read the author that way at all.

What I see is her tracing a continutiy of "liberal oppression" of the black community in recent decades with the assistance of self serving figures like Jesse Jackson.

Personally, I was supportive of the original civil rights movement and believe it laid the ground work for talented, conscientious black individuals by the tens of thousands to contribute to the strength of our nation. They have and IMHO will continue to do so.

What the author and I object to is the pattern of liberal democrat policies that have served to reinforce false notions of black inferiority by in recent decades via efforts to give black people preferential treatment where none is necessary! Such separate and unequal treatment implies that these liberals don't believe black people have the brains or ability to be successful on their own.

Conservative blacks like the author resent this and I strongly agree with them.

Patim,
I don’t know what bit of madness prompts me to jump into the discussion that you started, except an impulse to get you to check out the data. Read The Bell Curve, a very open but also sensitive discussion, carefully backed by data, of ethic differences as related to IQ. Specifically, look at page 323, where the authors give a graph of average income before and then after controlling for IQ.
Before:
Annual wages for a year-round worker, 1989, of average age (29) before controlling for IQ:
white: $27,327
black $20,994
latino 23,409.

If you control for IQ you find a different story, i.e.,

for a person of average age and average IQ (100):
white: $25,546
black $25,001
latino $25,159

If this data is accurate, it is hard to make the argument that racism is a powerful force in American life. In fact, the only logical conclusion is that there is no evidence of racism at all. Equal talent meets with equal success.
As Thomas Sowell sometimes says to the liberals: “It is too bad that God did not make the world to your moral specifications.” El gaviero
