I agree with your post, accept I really did feel sorry for him. He said he was doing it to "further his career". It was pathetic, and he deserves pity (imo).

I kind of got the feeling that the Judge was a
little pissed off with the Gore team. One thing
that transpired was when they had Judge Burton
from Palm Beach County on the stand and he related
that story about Carole Roberts and how she hand
selected 3 heavy Democratic precincts to test for
the 1% hand count, then at 2 am based upon this
handcount with 190 more votes for Gore, she held
a news conference and said they would find "1900
votes for Al Gore" if they recounted PBC. That
number was widely reported in the media but Judge
Burton said on the stand that he didn't think
that there was any reason to believe that they
would actually find these votes (they didn't).
I bet that whole episode weighed pretty heavy
in his decision. Never try to cheat a Judge!
