The same reason he wanted to destroy Adam and Eve. The same reason he led a rebellion in heaven. It initially started with pride

4:16 "And Cain went out from the presence of the LORD." (snuck away!)

4:17 And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch.

(Hard to imagine Cain marrying his mom. Hard to imagine a city with only 3 people in it. But it is not hard for me to imagine that you believe it!)

Oh, sorry! We were talking about pride. Satan wants to fill the lake of fire with burning souls (oxygen combining with ???) because of pride. Just as clear as mud. Sensible.

It was never clear that the serpent was Satan - if it was important, why wasn't that amplified. The bible doesn't even mention Satan much really considering how Fundies consider him the cornerstone of evil.

Lucifer is never mentioned by name except tangentially and colorfully. Satan (who we can only assume is Lucifer) seems to hang around and chat with God like old golfing buddies. There is that conversation between God and Satan in Job 1:6 where God tells Satan to go mess with Job's life. That kind of sucks. God also has to ASK Satan what has he been up to. That seems lame for the Almighty. Satan also tries to tempt Jesus (who is also God, right?). THAT shouldn't work, should it?

I think the following treatise is the best work describing Satan's role in astrophysics and the creation of the asteroid belt that I've ever read. Truly revealing. Why didn't they teach that in science is all I can say.
