"remand" results in the re-writing of the rationale of the opinion in all the cases. But with an overturn or reversed, the new opinion has to be different than the first opinion; while with vacate the opinion itself could stand, just the rationale has to change.

I know I said that poorly....where are the damn lawyers when you need them...?

I'll give it a try at mathematical notation

Opinion A has justification X

Vacate and remand:
Opinion A or B is ok; must have justification Y

Reverse or Overturn
Opinion B is ok [but not A]; must have justification Y
