Scumbria, <How do you lose by fighting? You lose by quitting.>

Remember the Black Knight in "Monty Python and the Holy Grail"? That guy sure didn't quit, even after having all of his limbs hacked off.

Your man Gore is starting to look like that guy.

Dear Scumbria:

Global Thermo Nuclear War is won by not fighting it. On a more typical case, quitting drinking (or using any other mind altering drug) and then driving is a great way to keep living instead of fighting to keep doing it (I know quite a few people who lost their lives that way (just look at your local newspaper or news broadcast)). You want Alan Greenspan to quit fighting inflation (the last war in your words) instead of continuing. A good gambit in chess is to set it up so that an opponent fights to take your queen while losing many pieces, and later, the game. There are many times where continuing to fight make you lose a lot more than winning a battle and that quitting when the odds are against you to leave enough to win when the odds are with you is a tried and true method. It has even been used successfully a few times in Presidential Elections.

Yes, you can win while quitting and lose by fighting on.

Pete

Scumbria-- Re: I don't get it. How do you lose by fighting? You lose by quitting.

You've never heard of "He that fights and runs away May turn and fight another day?" Part of being successful in anything is picking your fights correctly. I think Gore was toast as a future national candidate as soon as he lost, but if had managed to wage a decent campaign and been more likeable, the appropriate strategy was to concede and wage the legal war in the background. He would have had a much better image, and if it later turned out that he had indeed won Florida, he would have pretty much been guaranteed the victory in 2004, even if he were not able to get in all the legal challenges in time for the 2000 election. As certain Democratic party officials were pointing out over the weekend, the votes will ultimately be counted under the Florida open election laws. By fighting this thing even though it looks he will probably lose, he has destroyed himself as a future candidate if (as I believe is most probably the case) he did indeed lose Florida by a tiny margin.
