>>>He even suggested that there would be more merit in the hand counting rationale if all of the chad counties had been requested. He seemed to be chiding the plaintiff for not doing that.<<<

In retrospect, that would have been a good request for Gore to have made.

On the other hand, there were serious problems in three of the four counties requested (I don't know well enough the history of Broward). In Volusia, there was the 10,000 votes registered for the socialist candidate--so that needed checking; in Palm Beach, the Buchanon vote controversy; in Miami-Dade, there were allegations of voter fraud as recently as '97. Were there any voting irregularities in Broward?

Just becuase James Baker claimed that's what the Democrats were doing doesn't mean that's what they were doing. On balance, Gore had good reason to request handcounts in those counties. Bush would have done the same, were the situations reversed.

It's just too bad the Republicans responsed with what amount to groin kicks as a response to Gore's legal and rightful request to the handcount. This is now history now. But I have a feeling, when all comes out and is known, the history clock will quite cruel to Bush should he 'take' the presidency in Year 2000.
