Around here the last recourse of the religious is the testimony of "the visionaries", who seem to sprout on every street corner. My favorite visionary report was one that purported to tell the details of the Virgin Mary's early life and upbringing, the V.M. being a very popular subject with the visionaries. The report claimed that Mary's family was wealthy, prominent, and oddest of all, devoutly Catholic, which must have been quite a neat trick, since the Catholic church didn't exist yet. The report was much discussed, though, featured in a number of local newspapers and unflinchingly accepted by the followers of the visionaries, even though many of them, in normal life, are reasonable and educated people.

It is amazing how thoroughly faith can blind.
