Richard,

Ukraine, Belarus, Russia (also Poland and Latvia.) I know my roots back for 3 generations, but nothing beyond. My family has been in the states for about 100 years, and my wife's for about 10 years.

richard,

How far back have you traced your ancestry?

My wife has mostly Jews from Russia in her ancestry (they emigrated at the end of the 19th century) . In researching her side of the family, I ran into an interesting roadblock. It seems that the Russian Jews didn't usually take last names until the early 1800's (and we don't have her ancestry past 5 generations). At that time, the Russian government told them that they had to start using last names and keeping records (I'm guessing for taxation purposes).

At least that's what I read. Anyone know any differently? (I'd love to be able to take her side back further).

Dave
