Do you suppose AMD all sudden figured out a magical way to reduce power by 80%?

It is possible. Clock gating, dynamic voltage management, dynamic frequency management and reducing driver sizes on non-critical paths can easily lead to 80% power reduction.

It depends on how much of this was already factored into the T-Bird design. I suspect very little was present, and remember that AMD has been rather involved with Transmeta. ;^)
