QLogic Switches to Support InfiniBand 1.0 Architecture Specification

QLogic Engineers Recognized for Contribution to Spec That Drives First-Generation InfiniBand Architecture Based Products

ALISO VIEJO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 5, 2000-- QLogic Corp. (Nasdaq:QLGC - news), the leading SAN infrastructure provider, announced today that it plans to introduce InfiniBand(TM)(a) switch products, demonstrated in prototype form since August, that will support version 1.0 of the InfiniBand(a) Architecture Specification. At the most recent InfiniBand Trade Association's Developers Conference, members of the QLogic InfiniBand engineering team were recognized for their contributions in authoring the 1.0 specification, which was developed along with more than 200 other companies in the InfiniBand Trade Association. The 1.0 specification, now publicly available for purchase and download at www.infinibandta.org, is the basis for development of first-generation InfiniBand-based products.
QLogic has been an early leader in the development of InfiniBand fabrics, which are positioned to ultimately replace shared buses such as PCI, as the next server to server interconnect or server-to-peripheral connection. Unlike PCI, InfiniBand architecture is a switched fabric architecture that enables the connection of additional devices without performance degradation. InfiniBand architecture provides increased reliability, availability and scalability for server I/O subsystems.
``The InfiniBand 1.0 architecture specification is a key milestone that enables companies to accelerate production on real InfiniBand architecture based products,'' said Jim Pappas, director of initiative marketing for Intel's Fabric Component Division. ``With the successful demonstration of a prototype InfiniBand switch at the last Intel Developer Forum, and their commitment to supporting the 1.0 architecture, QLogic has shown it is well on its way to bringing first-generation InfiniBand architecture based products to market.''
At the Intel Developer Forum that took place in San Jose on August 18, QLogic's prototype switch provided data connections between servers, network, and storage devices. The switch used ten 2.5 Gbps dual-simplex data ports for connectivity and a subnet management agent, enabling remote switch management. QLogic also demonstrated a prototype Graphical User Interface (GUI) for subnet management that allows end users to choose switch, port and channel adapter views for examining counts and statuses.
``We are proud to be recognized for our contribution to the InfiniBand 1.0 Architecture Specification,'' said Rob Davis, vice president of advanced technology and planning, QLogic. ``Now that the spec has been completed we can begin to introduce our products. These include switches, adapters, bridges and management, and span across our different business units.''
QLogic simplifies SAN implementations by providing OEMs, system integrators and resellers with a single point of contact for end-to-end SAN hardware and software. Customers value QLogic's technology, support and ability to provide best-of-breed products with short time-to-sales. QLogic saves customers time and resources by providing a portfolio of hardware, software and service components. With these tools, OEMs and resellers can develop and deploy SAN connectivity solutions faster, more cost effectively and with less risk.

Smart Storage Announces San Configured Storage With Its Smartstor Infinet Product

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 5, 2000 5:24:00 PM EST

ANDOVER, Mass., Dec 5, 2000 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Smart Storage Inc., the leading
provider of standards-based online data storage software, in conjunction with four leading
storage vendors, recently demonstrated a SAN configuration of SmartStor InfiNet. The
demonstration integrated a Plasmon optical jukebox, an Exabyte M2 tape library,
fibre-channel-to-SCSI bridges from ATTO, and a QLogic switch. The collaboration of these
four companies, using currently shipping components, demonstrates the viability of secondary
storage in high-performance, distributed SAN configurations.

SmartStor InfiNet is a data management software product that virtualizes primary and
secondary storage volumes into a single easily managed volume. The product offers intelligent
data migration based on storage policies and provides cost-effective, long-term data
accessibility. From a single, unified Explorer-like console, InfiNet administrators can
simultaneously set policies, monitor events, and seamlessly manage the availability of critical
business information regardless of whether it is physically located on a server, RAID storage
subsystem or secondary storage devices such as JBOD, optical, and tape.

"SAN technology is evolutionary, not revolutionary. While our technology is very well
positioned to take advantage of SAN technology, we also recognize that our success is based
on partnering with other vendors to ensure that our respective products work together,
providing a turn-key solution to our customers," stated Peter Smails, vice president of sales &
marketing at Smart Storage.

"SAN technology is now entering a more mature, stable phase and customers are looking to
add proven, highly reliable, cost-effective removable storage to complement and help control
the ever-increasing growth of on-line storage capacity. Plasmon is pleased to be working with
Smart Storage on the leading edge of enabling this technology integration," said Tom
Ferguson, vice president of sales for Plasmon.

"Coupled with proven SmartStor products for DVD and MO and Exabyte tape support," said
Curt Mulder, market development manager at Exabyte, "this SAN configuration is the ideal
solution for IT and MIS professionals who want to reduce cost and maintenance of their
storage solutions. This solution also offers users superior capacity at a very low cost. Exabyte
sees Smart Storage as a company that is proven and dedicated to producing the best storage
products. We are happy to be working with them."

"Given the global explosion of digital data, the fundamental ability of storing, retrieving and
sharing information is as critical as the information itself," said Don Bauch, director of
marketing at ATTO Technology. "ATTO is pleased to work with Smart Storage in enabling
mission-critical data to be reliably shared among multiple users in a SAN configuration."

"QLogic believes storage virtualization is an important technology in the evolution of storage
networking," said Carla Kennedy, vice president of marketing for QLogic's Switch Products
Group. "By combining QLogic SAN infrastructure solutions like our SANbox switches with
products like SmartStor InfiNet, network administrators can better manage the availability of
data in a cost-effective manner."
