The election contest was good for the country. We had an opportunity to see how Bush would react. We saw the Florida Republican machine in operation. We saw that the election was so close in Florida that Bush would not even let us have a peek at those disputed ballots. We saw the reaction of the Florida Legislature. We saw a process at work. We discovered that we would never know who really won
the State of Florida with any certainty. The process has forced Bush and the entire Republican party to the center where they will need the cooperation of Democrats to have any chance of success. I am pleased that Al Gore pursued the contest. The country is better off because of it.
