Self denial by the democrats is reminiscent of the way republicans reacted to the impeachment outcome. It is the other side of the same coin. The lesson for the US is that our politics need to become less contensious. In a way we are developing the blood feuds of non-democratic countries in our politics. The self denying democrats led by Jesse Jackson and Co. may turn this election into a racial thing which it certainly is not. What Bush needs to do is appoint Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford to head an election reform commission that makes sure voting systems are modernized and that access to the polls is as easy in minority/urban communities as in the suburbs. They are not now but need to be made so.
