Kenneth, read many of the replies by other posters. What do I think? By your definition, we may not be in a recession. However, I do know that the economy could be liken to a skater on thin ice. If he skates fast enough, the crack behind him may not catch up. Of course the crack represents recession. Economic slow-down? Definitely.

That crack is definitely there. In the bond marker, bankruptcies are on the increase and they get less back on these. The internet bubble has burst and many have lost their newly made fortunes. And so on.

Another illustration: A man stands on the edge of a drop off, blinded by sunlight. Is a cliff there, or merely a curb. Knowing the answer to that could make a real difference in how to play the market next spring.
