Can you explain how the Hot Subject list really works?

For example, today

Subject 37044

was about number 25 on the hot list, with a "Hot Score" of 60%. There was precisely one new post to this thread (the first in about a month), and I doubt there was a flurry of bookmarking, as nothing has happened today news-wise related to the company, and a full-text search for the stock symbol on SI doesn't turn up much at all.

Personally, I'd like to see Hot Subjects by category - e.g., Coffee Shop, Short-term trading, Biotech, etc.
