About the recent appearance of the Gigabyte GA-7DXC AMD-760 motherboard in Japan. The motherboard is configured with 5 PCI slots, 1 AGP slot, and 2 DDR SDRAM DIMM sockets, and is comprised of AMD's AMD-761 northbridge and the VIA686B southbridge. The motherboards currently being sold in six shops in Akihabara are bundled with 128 MB of PC2100 DDR SDRAM and are priced between 46,800 yen and 49,800 yen. In terms of US dollars, this translates roughly to $421 and $448, which is quite a pretty penny for a rather slim motherboard.

Unfortunately, information is too sparse at this point to determine whether the premium on this motherboard bundle is the result of the included DDR SDRAM module or the motherboard itself. However, it is unlikely Gigabyte is bundling the modules, so it likely the case that the shops have very few motherboards and/or modules at the moment and want to make sure they get all they can from them.

In any event, it would be nice to see the premiums drop somewhat. According to the article, the ASUS A7M266 (AMD-760) and Iwill KA266-R (ALi MAGiK 1) are both set to make their debut in Akihabara soon. Hopefully the arrival of additional entries into the market will reduce prices to more acceptable levels, especially considering the Athlon-DDR platform's anticipated positioning below the dual-channel DRDRAM Pentium 4 in terms of cost.
