Yep, that one's been circulating a few months. I'm reasonably certain Merril won't pay a premium to Schwab's currently absurd 41 billion dollar market cap in cash, and Merril's @ a PE of 15 or so now meaning a stock takeover would be out. Probably something they cooked up either thinking that a) Schwab would go the way of Pets.com, at which point a cash takeover would be reasonable or b) they were unsure of their own online brokerage biz. At this point, Merrill's online biz is running quite well, according to those who use it. So I'm not concerned. Besides, I'm short both sides of the trade, and should it occur I'll clean up on the drop Merrill would take.

All just MHO, of course....
