OT Hi WTSherman,

RE: "The sentiments of so many people seem to be "I believe what I believe, I don't want to think about it, I don't want to know if there's more to the issue than I understand, I believe what I believe". This fear and paranoia about actually trying to understand complex issues and look underneath the surface is truly scary."

I have an investigative and curious mind so sometimes I bump up against folks who aren't quite as curious, which is why I find your comment about people's fear at investigating complex issues interesting. In fact, generally speaking, I sometimes feel our society doesn't have an investigative approach to problems. The elections were one example of that: a lot of opinions in the media, but few facts in the media to sort through the problem. (Exception: CNN did a great job at providing links to the actual Statutes and briefings, which was really nice).

Sometimes it feels like society gets "stuck", without investigating or solving whatever problem that needs to be solved.

I enjoyed your post.

RE: "if its someone who doesn't just have visceral reactions to things and then internalize those reactions to the point that they become beliefs"

I think a person can have a visceral reaction and even internalize these reactions without necessarily projecting them as beliefs over the population at large. So, I wouldn't necessarily equate a strong reaction with a projection onto the population at large.
