Greenberg Has It Wrong

"I spoke with Cynthia Merrell, Cree's CFO, about this issue and she told me that
Greenberg has it wrong. She says Microvision badly needs Cree's help on a blue
laser product, and Cree incurred expenses by accelerating its research in this
area. According to Merrell, Microvision's $3.1 million payment was basically a
reimbursement to Cree for the additional expenses. In other words, operating
income would have been the same without the Microvision arrangement, because
Cree would not have incurred those expenses to begin with.

Excerpt from: Addressing Cree Concerns

Cree has been criticized for its R&D arrangements with other companies;
some well-known shorts say those deals have artificially added to the
bottom line. CFO Cynthia Merrell says that's not the case. "
