FWIW, I'd be interested in any theories how/why it no longer seems to be there. I tend to watch a lot of Discovery/TLC documentaries on these things. I'm really fascinated by anything related to the solar system/universe.

I would have been a good LT Worff on the Enterprise :-o

Water...possibly lost due to impacts..... during a period of heavy bombardment....( Martian meteors on Earth speak of Big Impact Events....)...lower gravity on Mars also...so water could escape easier...after such eventS
