In the end, I'm still curious as to why, if QCT/Spinco is indeed being given "essential" CDMA-related patents along with the spinoff, Qualcomm found it necessary to strike a deal now, rather than opt to wait a few months and thus not compromise the selling price of its "crown jewels".

Dr J has said that his biggest concern is that CDMA mass adoption happens later rather than sooner. I agree. The easiest and best way to make it happen as soon as possible is to grow the value chain, to have as many companies as possible with a vested interest in the growth of adoption. Certainly a fine line has to be walked between growing the value chain and giving away the crown jewels to do it. If deals can be struck with reasonable economics, nothing is more important than growing the value chain.
