Gore's war on Boy Scouts

As Vice President Al Gore Jr. remains a contender for president of the United States, it is troubling
that he seems determined to war on the Boy Scouts of America because of its moral stand in the
interest of the boys who join the voluntary private organization.

The situation is well explained in a statement from the Family Research Council:

"WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Vice President Al Gore has pledged to use the proposed Employment
Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) to overturn the Boy Scouts' policy barring homosexuals as
scoutmasters and members. In a little-noticed interview just before the election, Mr. Gore also said
he wants to erase legal distinctions between public and private groups.

"On ABC's Good Morning America on October 26, Gore told interviewer Charles Gibson that he
wanted to bring an end to 'discrimination' against homosexuals in public, as well as private groups.
'The principal piece of legislation on that, incidentally, is the Employment Non-Discrimination Act,
which I support and which Gov. Bush does not support. And I think we need to move to a day
when we don't have discrimination,' Gore said.

" 'The U.S. Supreme Court said that as a private group, the Scouts could determine their own
membership and leadership,' FRC's Senior Director of Cultural Studies Robert Knight said
Wednesday. 'Al Gore's statement expressing a desire to use government power even against
private groups appears to go far beyond even what the New Jersey court ruled. We need to stop
Gore's plan to bring down the Scouts.'

"The Boy Scouts won their case when the U.S. Supreme Court disagreed with the New Jersey
Supreme Court's designation of the Scouts as a 'public accommodation' subject to the 'sexual
orientation' category of the state civil rights law.

" 'The Scouts have already been attacked in cities like Los Angeles where the city council voted to
sever ties with the Scouts. Now Gore wants to federalize that attack by passing legislation that
treads on the First Amendment freedoms of private associations.

" 'The Los Angeles City Council used a city discrimination law as the basis for cutting off ties to
the Boy Scouts. The passage of ENDA would give the same weapon to the federal government
that Los Angeles and states like New Jersey have used to assail the right of the Scouts to set their
own membership and leadership standards,' said Knight."

Mr. Gore's attitude on this issue is just one of many reasons we hope he does not become
president.
