Of course there is EDGE. It is GPRS core based more efficient air interface modulation yielding 3x the bits (=speed). I admit it is difficult to see.

All the major GSM manufacturers offer EDGE capable BTSs already now. EDGE´s application on top of these and GPRS core is very cost efficient.

But why would anyone want EDGE? After all WCMDA juggernaut is going to crush everything on its way.

The reason is that WCDMA is not going to be main stream before 2005. Another reason is that WCDMA is going to be very expensive both on networks and hand sets.

But what really turns EDGE from an option to a necessity is that many of the operators will not have 3G licenses.

Also the user will get a lot with EDGE. We are talking about 300 kbs/sec, and a screen size of a box of Lucky Stikes, max. Try this:

1) download and save a sexy picture between 2x3" and 3x4"
2) check the file size
3) think the properties of packet data: constant 24hr automatic upload of data meanwhile you are chatting nonchalantly but charmingly (ETSI specified style) with the good looking receptionist
4) think
