Buffalo Technology Announces Newest Member of AirStation Wireless LAN Family -- Wi-Fi Certified Local Router Offers Industry-Leading Affordability and Flexibility for Corporate, SOHO and Home LAN Usage.

Story Filed: Wednesday, December 06, 2000 8:04 AM EST

TORRANCE, Calif., Dec 6, 2000 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Buffalo Technology (USA) Inc., an industry-leading manufacturer of computer peripherals and wireless LAN solutions for business, SOHO and home use, Wednesday announced the launch of the newest version of its popular AirStation access point.

AirStation's local router, model WLAR-L11-L, is the industry's first wireless LAN solution to allow multiple LAN connections to a CATV/xDSL wireless connection thus integrating a new level of flexibility suitable for the needs of medium-sized companies with a price point that makes it an affordable solution for a family's home network.

The AirStation local router, which is based on the new 2.4GHz 802.11b wireless LAN standard, is the first access point available that allows the coexistence of both wired and wireless LANs via an integrated four-port 10/100 Mbps switch.

Coupled with the Wi-Fi compatibility of the system, which ensures that the access point can communicate with any other Wi-Fi certified wireless LAN cards, AirStation brings a new level of flexibility in network design and management.

Other functions of the AirStation local router include a static IP masquerade function that allows users to design their own WWW server, play Internet games, perform Internet conferencing and other applications which require access from outside of the LAN. In addition, security has been enhanced through a packet filtering function that effectively provides firewall protection.

Richard,

From Gene's link:

If you need a P4 unit, the $2999 IBM NetVista A60I offers the best value among the three systems we tested; however, its 8X DVD-ROM drive was the slowest here. Gateway's Performance 1500 has the most feature-rich configuration--and a $3999 tag to match. At $3559, Dell's Dimension 8100 is slightly cheaper, perhaps due to its smaller hard drive (40GB versus the Gateway's 60GB) and slower DVD-ROM drive (12X versus 16X for the Gateway).

The clear price/performance victor among the machines we tested is the $2699 Micron Millennia Max XP, the 1.2-GHz Athlon system.
