Malaysia to be first developing nation to mint gold bullion

SHAH ALAM: Malaysia will be the first among developing countries to produce minted gold bullion when the first batch of coins goes on sale in the middle of January.

PRECIOUS ... Dr Mahathir holding up the first Malaysian gold bullion coin in Shah Alam yesterday.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad yesterday minted the country's first gold coin when he visited and opened the Royal Mint of Malaysia.

"Our gold coins will be sold according to market price. The coins are comparable in quality to world famous coins such as the American Gold Eagle, South African Krugerrand, Austrian Philharmoniker and the Canadian Maple Gold Leaf,'' he said.

Dr Mahathir believed international gold coin investors would be attracted to the Malaysian gold coins for their quality finish and distinct features.

Earlier, Bank Negara Governor Datuk Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz said the coins were produced from gold of 999.9 purity.

The coins come in three sizes--one ounce, half ounce and quarter ounce.

Dr Zeti said the gold coins featured the mousedeer and hibiscus flower.

"The Malaysian gold coin is named Kijang Emas Malaysia (Golden Mousedeer of Malaysia).''

"The mousedeer symbolises heroism and brightness as depicted in the historical opening of Malacca by Parameswara,'' she said.

Dr Zeti added that the Royal Mint was a subsidiary owned by Mariwasa Kraftangan Sdn Bhd.
