Yup. I can follow that, and I even respect it. I'm not claiming "to be above it" either, but I'm pretty sure that it doesn't take me or us or America very far to engage in vitriolic personal attack. And, I know people on this board ain't gonna like it, but I respect Gore the man--I'm not talking about members of his campaign organization here (that's another point)--for doing more to keep away from these sorts of attacks than Bush. Bush's repeatedly saying that "Gore will say anything to be president." constitutes a direct attack on the character of the man. I actually think that's a lot different from saying, for example, that "Bush isn't ready to be President." In point of fact, Bush has the thinnest resume of anyone who has been a major party candidate in many, many decades; maybe since Harding. So I don't consider that a personal attack. And, just to cite one example, Gore's consistent concern about Global Warming, dating to 1981, which many people continue to scoff at as a real environmental concern, is a pretty good indication to me that he is not willing to say anything to get to be president because a lot of people don't want to hear that sort of statement, period.
