OT: you have an excellent memory then! There is lots of confusion about the origin and I only remember that because my husband wanted a copy once and I tracked it down.
Don't know if you are a trivia junkie as Neo and I can be, but if so-
The Desiderata was written in 1927, and published in a volume entitled "The Poems of Max Ehrmann," in 1948. It was also quoted in a small booklet of devotional poetry compiled by the Reverend Frederick W. Kates (rector of Saint Paul's Parish from 1956 to 1961) and published through the Board of Evangelism of the Methodist Church.

During Lent, it was Mr. Kate's custom to put into the pews mimeographed leaflets of an inspiration nature. One of these included a copy of Mr. Ehrmann's prose-poem. It is presumed that someone "found" one of these leaflets while in the Church, carried it away, and then passed it on.

The date of 1692 refers to the founding of Saint Paul's Parish, the first of Baltimore's Churches. It is in no way connected with the poem.

The Parish has received inquiries on this piece of prose from every state in the Union and from most countries of the world. It is an unusual week in the life of Old Saint Paul's when we don't have at least two or three visitors who come into the Church asking to "see" the Desiderata.

One of my favorites and I keep it posted in my office. I believe the later date is the proper one. I've heard that there was a known author. The phrase "the universe is unfolding as it should" would seem to indicate the later date being the correct one. TTT
