Mosel Vitelic Revs Up 12-Inch Fab Plan
December 6, 2000 (TAIPEI) -- Executives of Mosel Vitelic Inc. said recently that the company will step up its plans to build two 12-inch silicon-wafer fabrication plants in 2001.

ProMos Technologies Inc., Mosel Vitelic's joint venture with Siemens AG, will begin to equip its 12-inch fab in the third quarter of 2001 and start commercial production at the fab in 2003. Mosel Vitelic itself is planning to build another 12-inch fab.

The executives pointed out that ProMos is constructing clean rooms for its 12-inch fab now, and will begin to tool up the fab in the third quarter of next year. In three to six months after installation is completed, the fab will begin production. Initial production will concentrate on 256Mb DRAMs, and a monthly output of 9,000 wafers is expected.

Mosel Vitelic plans to build a similar facility in Canada to produce system-on-a-chip devices. However, the plan has been postponed since it has not received support from the Canadian government.

Wires report that the Canadian government has not yet decided whether or not to award 12-inch fab investors tax advantages. The uncertainty has prompted Mosel Vitelic to contact China, Korea, Germany and Britain about possible alternative locations. Although the company has not yet received responses from the relevant governments, its executives emphasize that the company definitely intends to go ahead with this facility.

Mosel Vitelic executives say that chipmakers have to invest in 12-inch fabs if they want to stay competitive.
