I know there is a difference. For example, sending your operatives to alter absentee ballot applications is a felony, driving under the influence of alcohol and stealing X-Mas decorations (assuming you don't steal too many) are misdemeanors.

Unfortunately, the Republican biased organization hired to "clense" the voter roles in Florida did not understand the difference. Thousands of people who were not felons were not allowed to vote because this private company was too stupid or partisan to care about the not so subtle difference.
