ftth- Thanks for the article. As like most BBFW articles, it talks mainly of trial size rollouts. One wonders if all we keep reading about are trials, are these projections going to stand?

Here is the only BBFW rollout that I know of that has moved beyond a trial size. In carefully reading the PR, it appears that indeed there may be 10,000 actual customers up and running. Keep in mind, with an ALA PR, it's sometimes hard to pick out facts.

Hanaro Telecom has signed up more than 10,000 LMDS(local multipoint distribution system) customers...
alcatel.com

Since it appears to be rolling out so slowly in the USA, I sometimes wonder if BBFW players can unlock the incumbents twisted pair lock on business use of T1, HDSL(2), SDSL? Seems if BBFW doesn't offer a significant benefit over the twisted pair installed base, they may have a tough time getting customers to switch over.

Since the copper is already there and well entrenched, why wouldn't the incumbents just keep undercutting the price of BBFW players as they move into their market? I'm beginning to think that maybe the only large markets for BBFW is going to be outside North America. -MikeM(From Florida)

Hi ftth,

Re: Neither Sprint nor WorldCom would discuss how many customers are currently using their fixed wireless solutions. "We’re not really making money yet," says a characteristically straightforward Robinson. "We’re steering away from [giving actual numbers] until we get a good feel. We’re up in the thousands. The financial guys don’t really like us [giving numbers].

LOL! What a howler....

Best, Ray
