would you refute that during the 40 years that the democrats controlled congress Lets see, You must be talking about 1954-94. During that 40 years, we had a Republican President for 22 of 40 years. A huge portion of that spending went to fighting and winning the cold war - an investment that is currently paying dividends. In the meanwhile, the economy grew faster than the debt so there is no question about our ability to finance the debt. It is kind of like moving up to a bigger mortgage when your income goes up. It is not always bad for government to borrow when the money is spent for a greater return.
