Dear Jozef: Well the price has dropped so much any improvement in earnings over last qtr seems to me would be an improvement in the ratios. JDN

What all this probably means is that the seasonality of the consumer market is slowly going away, and the consumer market will be more even, just like the corporate market.

Joe, good point. Was it Gateway that said that PC prices had gotten so reasonable that people were not waiting anymore to justify them as a gift, rather were buying them right when they wanted them instead? Must have been GTW because nobody else warned and had to come out with some words. Exception is Apple and I already posted today my opinion of their business.

Joe,

re: What all this probably means is that the seasonality of the consumer market is slowly going away, and the consumer market will be more even, just like the corporate market. The evidence for that is, if you recall, the in the earlier quarters of this year, boxmakers reported stronger than expected consumer sales (for Q1 - Q3) and now weaker than expected for Q4.

Why would PC's be different than any other consumer product? What is happening is that retail PC sales are soft, because folks don't feel as comfortable with their wealth, energy prices are eating into their disposable income, and there are a lot of nifty new products to spend their money on. I don't think it's a change in buying patterns, it's just a lousy Christmas season for consumer PC's.

John

Allow me to rephrase, since PCs aren't toys anymore, there's less of an Xmas rush.

Good point.

re: "worst quarter in a decade..." The original source of that rumor:
Barrett was in a coffee shop and reached into his pocket to pay for the coffee. He pulled out some change and in his hand was a 1990 quarter that was severely mangled. He said "that the ugliest 10 year old quarter I've ever seen!" A fellow in the coffee shop (who happend to be a broker) overheard the part of that he wanted to, and got on his cell phone and......the rest is history.

that's how the rumor was started.

(just kidding, of course)
