Quick and Reilly sold 10 shares of QCOM short for me automatically for a $14.95 commission. Now I know that this is a silly kind of transaction but I didn't want to suddenly start getting outrageous margin calls and I also wanted to compare shorting with buying a put to see which worked the best.

I haven't tried shorting one share of Berkshire Hathaway to see what happened. It might feed right into their Internet computerized system.

Also, I am a pretty good Q&R customer, giving them lots of option and stock commissions so maybe somebody looked at it and said "OK."

Spekulatius, that 100 share minimum is a Waterhouse house rule. I also have Interactive Brokers who will allow odd lot short sales and even better only charge $1.00 commission for 100 shares or less. If it's over 100 shares it's a straight penny per share. When I used Datek in 1998 they also would execute odd lot shorts.
