There are others here that could answer that better than I, but it is my understanding that the FP unit of the PIII is virtually identical to that of the P4 - at least to the extent that I don't believe any dependencies have been changed / removed.

If Intel can come up with an improved FPU within a reasonable time-frame, it could prove a quite potent weapon. I definitely consider the FPU (despite SSE2) the weakest point of the P4. Of course, in benchmark terms it may not matter that much since many of the common FPU benchmarks are also heavily bandwidth dependent.
