there were Roman guards at the tomb.

Battle maybe, trickery? it seems that the women of Jesus' camp were hanging out at the tomb. Behaps the guards were lured away. Perhaps the accounts are not 100% accurate, why would Pilate take any note of the tomb is this was a jewish matter that he was ignoring anyway?

I'm sure that the tale of the stolen body was told long before me, in fact as soon as the resurection rumor started floating, and that Matthew or his sources would have come up with some cover for their hoax.

And there would be no motive to derelict one's duty on that watch? This case was only high profile to Christians. It is hard to find any mention of the facts in Roman documents. Sounds like a good time and place for a sentry to tie one on.

So the story goes. Number one- how do you know there really WERE guards at the tomb? You don't. Unfortunately newspaper accounts of today's news are rarely accurate, much less the news of....well...whenever it really was.

Two- if there were guards how reliable were they? Bribable? Most likely. Drunkards? Probably opportunistically. Or are you under the impression that the best and the brightest of the Roman empire (and the least corrupt) were assigned tomb guarding details? I'm not thinking this was a prestigious post.
