Elizabeth and All, if you have not already done so, you can easily get free access to the New York Times On-Line Edition. Their web site provides "a New Yorker's viewpoint" plus valuable research tools. For the "Left Coast" view, access to the L.A. Times On-Line Edition is also free. Both papers constantly update their sites, so that you get the latest news even in the wee hours of the night.
