Large coal, oil and older natural gas fired power stations use cooling towers or surface condensors, cooled by ocean, lake or river water to cool the steam after it powers the turbine. Cogeneration plants uses this steam for process or heating. A excellent company that has been very sucessful in recent years building cogeneration plants is Trigen (NYSE) Their website explains this efficiency difference very well. I believe it is at trigen.com
