Greg...don't think you have to worry about the electoral college going away. I believe that it would take a 2/3 majority to do away with it.

Don't you think there are enough small population states that would vote against it?

Yes, the punch cards are embarrassing, like dimples/pimples on our collective asses...

Do you live on the East Side of the Mississippi and that enters into your feelings about keeping the power of the electoral college on the "east side?"

Out here in Oregon, we had a "traditional machine in little booths" combined with humongous mail-in effort, and had the largest "turnout" in our electoral history...something like 86% of the registered electorate was "heard from" in an officially tabulated format.

And the result was that we were one of the slowest to report results, dang near right up there with Florida as far as getting them certified...and the second fact?

MANY MANY races were very very close in total vote tabulation results and necessiatated recounts and re-tabs.

My point?
Improvement in the "turnout and tab-out" formatting,
nationally
or in Florida
or whereEVER said improvement is implemented,
...I thoroughly suspect it will bring us more hotly contested results in the future unless we ditch this archane electoral college m.o., which is only applied to the top job anyhow.

We don't elect a dog catcher with an electoral college system in our state, nor a state senator, nor even a local council-person, NOR a governor for that matter.

And yet, systemic "chad" improvements will bring more close races, not fewer ones.

We better get used to not knowing by the time the polls close on the East Coast who our next president is. And we've got four years to fix what's been broke for a very long time.

Otherwise, we should be using electoral college m.o. in ALL elections from dogcatcher to.... that is if it is such a great idea.

You see, the possibility exists that the electoral college as it stands now can still give Gore the election if this how many voted for whom doesn't get solved, because if I understand things correctly, Gore has the most total electoral votes now...just not the magic "270"

And if that happens...do you think the benefits of this pre-modern civ system are going to remain unchallenged?

Fascinating times...
And these are ruminations from one who publically declared on this thread that I was NOT going to vote because it is already saucered and blowed by the unseen powers who are obviously still negotiating behind the scenes with the two candidates who are amazingly mum for the last 30 days about things that matter.
