Andreas: This stands for "circa" (Latin for "approximately"). Isn't this word used in English?

Very rarely. I have seen it used, mostly in older British English texts, though. I've come across it in a few American historical works as well (in reference to an approximate date).

Of course, Danes (+Germans+other Scandinavians) use it all the time, as you are well aware ;)
