hcm1943

no longer a "registered" msft program

That's what happened. When you downloaded that particular program it assigned itself to be your default jpeg viewer. When it became non-functional you had no program assigned to open these file types and windows was just asking you which one you would like to use in the future. By placing a checkmark in the box in the lower part of the open with window you will force the program you choose to be your default....until you download a viewer that steals the file association again.

tc :-)

Disappeared program.

Try using Find to search your disk for all .EXE files. It'll be a long list, but you can scroll through it quickly enough looking for the icon you're missing. If you find it, you've found your program. Try it out and see if it works OK.

I have no idea what caused the situation.

Cheers, PW.
