I've used both kinds of traps, my tests show the mice, at least in my area like the cheddar cheese better. I use Hoffman Super Sharp from the deli so they have a good last sniff. The traps with the metal trigger some times need some work on the release.

I've had traps out with both cheese and peanut butter at the same time and had kills in the cheese traps while the peanut butter traps were untouched. Could be they just don't like Jiff Extra Crunchy.
