John,

<The game is up. Intel understands the microprocessor marketplace, they have four customers for each customer AMD has. They didn't mince words, slowdown across all geographies, across all product lines. Started three weeks ago, sounds like it is accelerating. It's the world wide economy, and the industry, with nothing either company can do. >

I haven't heard the conf call but I doubt if Intel is upfront about competitive aspects of business. Clearly there is slowdown and I am willing to wager there are market share losses.

<I don't care which company fares worse, both are screwed.

We are both in the same sinking boat, in fact I am in both boats.>

From the valuation perspective, I agree but from the business perspective I disagree. AMD is very likely to have healthy growth inspite of the slowdown (unless flash slows down rapidly). Intel, on the otherhand, is in a tough spot until P4 ramps.

Chuck

Well, it might not be that bad. Europe is doing very well (better than last year), but computer prices are high due to the dollar's obscene strength. Fortunately, this has abated somewhat recently and looks to continue for a while.

The Asia-Pacific region is experiencing increased growth in the computer sector, as reported by e.g. Reuters this week.

Finally, there's still a chance that much of the US slowdown is due to this whole election debacle. While lost sales cannot generally be regained, I still believe there is a reasonable chance for a pickup in Q1.
