the G&K meme was firmly implanted in my mind

The intersection of ideas here really is a paradigm shift. One of the reasons there is such parallelism between biology/genomics and the new economics/G&K is that both deal with self-organizing and dynamic systems, while the older economics tended to be linear/discrete (with a distaste for the exogenous) and treat return on fixed assets.

This is, I think, the link from the stuff going on at the Santa Fe Institute and in Mauboussin's research to Moore's G&K thinking. Although M does not mention "network effects," those effects are implicit in his dynamic notion of increasing returns and the value chain. He's working from the same "mental model."
