Priceline.com Drops Plans To Enter Japan
Friday, December 8, 2000
NEW YORK (Nikkei)--Priceline.com Inc. has scrapped plans to operate in Japan, the large online retailer announced Thursday. Slumping domestic business is thought to be behind the decision, though the firm has not provided a reason.

Priceline.com has grown rapidly thanks largely to its unique online shopping system in which consumers set purchase prices.

In July, the company authorized a Softbank Corp. (9984) subsidiary to set up a wholly owned unit -- Priceline.com Japan Corp. -- capitalized at 960 million yen. The U.S. company was then going to purchase 960 million yen in convertible bonds issued by the local firm.

The new company had planned to start selling airline tickets and other products as early as next spring.
