Jobless Claims -- On Everyone's Watch List We have drawn your attention to this number for several weeks. Greenspan's remarks yesterday about the recent upward trend of initial jobless claims ("recent increases in initial unemployment insurance claims and the level of insured unemployment may be an early harbinger of an easing of these conditions") rendered this weekly update of the labor market additional importance. Initial jobless claims have typically shown a sizable increase prior to a slowing of economy activity or a recession (see chart below). ntrs.com
