hi august

re, "I tried calling Dell support a few months ago when I had a problem with my note book. You've got to be kidding, right?"

no, i'm not kidding. you have my assurance that if i was experiencing poor results with something, i would not recommend it to others.

"Have you ever gotten a warm body on the other end of the phone with them?"

absolutely each and every time that i have called. and judging by the fact that i have purchased three dells since 12/96, i'd estimate that i have called their tech support a minimum of 30 times.

"Their idea of support is to run you around punching numbers on the phone. That's what they call trouble shooting I guess. Just run them around and around; after about an hour, they'll hang up"

august, i must say, the above statement is so far from being representative of dell's tech support that i am almost compelled to ask you the same question that you asked me...."You've got to be kidding, right?". i say 'almost' because i get the feeling that you are serious. in which case i can only conclude that you are one of a very, very small minority of folks who have not had a good overall experience with dell support. they did not become the industry leader in reliability and service because of the sort of practices that you outline.

"SCREW them"

if i can say so, often this type of sentiment is clearly communicated to the tech support personnel when a call is made. in all honesty, it's not hard to imagine being in their shoes and being slightly put off by it. maybe that has something to do with the bad experience.

let me conclude by saying that troubleshooting and repairing our pc's is a process that requires patience. (it requires a lot of other things too, but i think most folks will agree, patience is at the top of the list of requisites. <g> ) obviously, you are a guy who gets bugged by "punching numbers". i can see how this would be frustrating. most of us are in no mood for further delays when we are having pc trouble.

i hope you are able to track down the time keeping prob. the knowledge base article posted by tc looks mighty useful.

good luck

:)
